OFW Savers Club

BY MISS JUNE INABAYAN

R
eintegration Project is an inter-agency program led by CBCP- ECMI (Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People) and LACMMI.  The project aims to connect the OFW and their family by promoting information sharing, understanding and unity to create greater awareness and advocacy on the implementation of viable reintegration programs such as savings, remittances, financial investment, capital build-up and business. To teach OFWs and their families to manage their hard earned money.

OFW endures the prolonged separation from his/her family in order to provide for the financial needs of loved ones back home.  Ironically, there is no certainty that when he/she comes home after contract completion he/she can readily enjoy the fruits of his labor. The absence of an enhanced OFW Reintegration Program (OFWRP), creates a scenario where the OFW family fails to address the problems brought about my migration.

Many overseas workers are unable to save and prepare for their financial health they return.  Often, the migrant worker returnee is in the same condition as when he left, forcing him to leave and work overseas again.

Financial Fitness Tips

  1. Pay yourself first.
Set aside money for your own savings before spending  on anything.
  1. Build emergency fund.
Develop a plan before emergencies occur so you don’t have to borrow money when the need arises.
  1. Control impulse buying.
Resist falling into the "bilmoko"(ibili mo ako), "bilkako" (bili kaya ako) trap.  Always ask yourself “Is this a need or want?” to avoid unnecessary expenses.
